‘I listen to the world. Sounds tell stories about place and time, and ask the listener to engage with their surroundings.’

Julia (1991) is a Dutch sound artist, composer, workshop leader and educator. Driven by a curiosity towards environmental sounds and listening, she explores in her work how we perceive and relate to place, and is interested in the potential this holds to shift the conceptions of our daily environments. She actively seeks the connection between her artistic practice and educational practice, and leads creative music workshops for a diverse range of participants.

Julia holds a Bachelor of Music in Education from the HKU Utrechts Conservatorium (Utrecht, NL) and a Master of Music in Leadership from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London, UK). After graduating she got offered a Fellowship at GSMD and got commissioned by Spitalfields Music to create the sound piece Filtering In.

Working in both the Netherlands and the UK, Julia has led workshops for the Barbican, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and TivoliVredenburg. Currently she works as Assistant Music Leader with the National Open Youth Orchestra in London, teaches choir and music at the Vrije Hogeschool and leads composition workshops for Het Concertgebouw.

Julia’s studies at GSMD have been supported by Fundatie van Renswoude, Hendrik Muller Fonds, Wim de Monchy Fonds and The Leverhulme Trust.
